Environmental Policy

1. Purpose and scope

This policy sets out where Maven International's environmental impact comes from and what we do to reduce it. It applies to our staff and to the freelance linguists and suppliers who work on our behalf.

2. Where our impact comes from

We are a language services business and don't manufacture anything. Our impact comes from these sources:

  • Travel. Flights and hotel stays for interpreters and staff on on-site assignments. This is likely our largest source of emissions.
  • Digital infrastructure. We rely on third-party technology platforms and cloud infrastructure for translation management, computer-assisted translation, machine translation, and remote interpretation. These run in third-party data centers that we do not operate or control, but they carry an environmental footprint.
  • Paper. Minimal. Maven is a remote-first, paperless company, and almost all our work is exchanged and delivered digitally.

3. What we do

Travel

  • Where it meets the client's needs, we offer remote or hybrid interpretation instead of flying interpreters in. The client decides. Some settings need interpreters in the room, such as shelters, courts, field operations, and closed negotiations.
  • We consider the location of interpreters when arranging in-person assignments and, where practical, use qualified interpreters who are based locally or nearby to reduce unnecessary travel. Where the client requires physical attendance, or where no suitable interpreter is available locally or nearby, travel may be necessary.
  • We combine assignments into one trip where the schedule allows.
  • Meetings are held online where appropriate, in line with our remote-first way of working.

Digital workflows

  • Maven is a remote-first company and operates paperless. We use digital workflows wherever practical: files are exchanged, reviewed, and delivered through our platforms, and we print only when a client asks for a printed deliverable.
  • We don't run our own servers; our systems are cloud-hosted.

4. Suppliers and linguists

We ask linguists and suppliers to work the same way on our assignments: digital delivery by default, and no travel the assignment doesn't need. When we choose event and equipment partners, we consider their environmental practice alongside quality and cost.

5. Legal compliance

Each group company complies with the environmental law that applies to it in the United States, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia.

6. Responsibilities

  • Director: owns this policy at group level and approves changes.
  • Project managers: when planning an assignment, propose the delivery format with the least travel that still meets the client's requirements, and where practical prefer interpreters based locally or nearby for in-person work.
  • Vendor management: explains these expectations to linguists and suppliers during onboarding.

7. Governance and review

This policy is reviewed every year, or sooner if our operating model or client requirements change materially. Send questions and suggestions to admin@maven-international.com.
